Taita Taveta County is often seen as a stop on the road to the coast. The Battlefield Run and Tsavo Cultural Festival set out to redefine it as a premier, immersive destination, where wildlife, culture and history converge and where every visit helps protect the Tsavo Ecoregion.
Wildlife, conservancies and the Tsavo Ecoregion
Wildlife and conservancies sit at the heart of the visit, together with the promotion of the Tsavo Ecoregion as a place to protect and a place to explore. Home of the Big Five, Tsavo is the setting for the whole event.
Tree planting and environmental awareness
Tree planting and environmental awareness are built into the programme, with tree planting, speeches and awards on Friday 9 October and greening ceremonies that partners can sponsor.
Game drives
Game drives put visitors among the wildlife: a game drive on the afternoon of Friday 9 October, and guided game viewing on Saturday 10 October in Tsavo East and Tsavo West National Parks, in collaboration with the Kenya Wildlife Service.
World War One heritage and battlefield tourism
The battlefields of the East African Campaign make Taita Taveta a destination for World War One heritage, explored on the Battlefield Walk, the Battlefield Cycling Tour and the Battlefield Guided Tour.
Mining tourism and gemstone discovery
Mining tourism and gemstone discovery introduce the gemstones and mining heritage of Taita Taveta, one more reason to stay longer in the county.
Adventure and eco-tourism in the Taita Hills
Adventure and eco-tourism at high altitude in the Taita Hills, including Vuria Hill at 2,200 m above sea level.
